Doctor, Doctor, Give Me The News
The season premiere of HOUSE last Tuesday handily beat its competition (7.6 rating, 20.7 million viewers), disproving the prevailing network wisdom that your lead character has to be likable, morally just and nubile. Dr. Gregory House, as you will recall, has a bad leg, is addicted to prescription drugs, dresses badly, is arrogant and manipulative, is cruel to his friends and is played by a British low-comic doing a flawless American accent.
Let’s get to work people! I want to see aging bastards with deep problems fronting all network TV shows by the end of the year! I don’t have to remind you that Ian McShane is going to be available.
