Mac Guy Hates Zune, But He’s Probably Right

I’m a sucker for a well-written pan, and technology maven Andy Ihnatko has a beaut of one in his column for the Chicago Sun-Times. In it Ihnatko heaps his elegantly crafted scorn on the recently released Microsoft Zune player, the iPod for people who wish they had less control over their own content.

“The Zune is a square wheel, a product that’s so absurd and so obviously immune to success that it evokes something akin to a sense of pity,” says Ihnatko. He predicts “the Zune will be dead and gone within six months.”

He also writes about the harrowing software installation process, the crippling DRM scheme, the circuitous process Microsoft insists on to buy music and just exactly how overpriced the Zune is.

Admittedly Ihnatko is a a longtime Apple supporter whose work has appeared in various Mac magazines for almost 20 years, but that doesn’t mean he doesn’t love new gadgets if they’re cool. The Zune, Andy doesn’t love so much.

Update: How is the Zune selling this holiday season?
