Thoughts on the 79th Annual Academy Awards

THE DEPARTED is one of Scorcese’s least innovative gangster pictures, a kind of extended running gag peppered with violence. He’s done similar work elsewhere, much better work which should have won best picture. Therefore, he’s likely to win for this one.
THE PAINTED VEIL nominated for nothing. Zilch. Nada. Bob Yari is going to be furious - he claims the studio botched the release because it came out too late to get oscar consideration. Call your lawyer, Bobby!
BORAT is up for best adapted screenplay, a surprise for everyone who who didn’t know there was a TV show AND for people who didn’t know there was a screenplay.
I’m taking bets for best animated feature… who’s in for MONSTER HOUSE? Anyone? Hey! Come back!
I’d like to see SUPERMAN RETURNS get best visual effects, if only because they somehow managed to make the cape red, but not red. Plus the eye/bullet gag was pretty stunning.
Let’s give APOCALYPTO best makeup, because I’m pretty sure that Mel had NOTHING to do with that.
I’m writing this before I look, but I bet best costume nominees are all period pictures…GASP! THE QUEEN and DEVIL WEARS PRADA! Okay, admittedly the latter takes place in an alternate universe, but this is truly a surprise. PRADA stands a pretty good chance too, which would make it the first contemporary story to win best costume since… oh who cares. it’s best costume.
Penelope Cruz get’s a well-deserved nod for best actress in VOLVER; but it’s not widely reported that a technical Oscar is being awarded to her cleavage. The cleavage has already gotten its own agent.
You can take anything I haven’t made a snarky comment on to mean that I agree with the nomination.
