Yesterday marked the resignation of Chris Albrecht, Chief Executive of HBO. He was arrested in a messy personal matter over the weekend involving a girlfriend and assault, but the important thing here is Albrecht is the guy who greenlighted THE SOPRANOS. Oh, and SIX FEET UNDER. And ENTOURAGE, BIG LOVE, ROME, and THE WIRE. HBO, possibly will never be the same.

You could argue that he had nothing to do with creating these shows. You’re wrong. Or you’re right, but it takes a visionary executive to commit money and resources to them. They’re not what you’d call safe bets. Much of what you see on Showtime, the HBO rival, is safe bets.

The LA Times runs down the situation.  They point out that there’s plenty of execs in the pipeline and they all have worked under Albrecht. I hope they’re right. On the other hand if they’re wrong, then I can save $12.99 a month.
