Paris In The Brig

We'll always have ParisParis Hilton, socialite, pop star, film star and accidental porn star, turned herself in to authorities to start her 23-day jail sentence for drunk driving. Normally this kind of thing flies beneath the high-falutin’ radar of BOX OFFICE WEEKLY, but do you know how Paris spent her last night before almost a month of incarceration? Being ridiculed at the MTV Movie Awards.

Normally the MTV Movie Awards is also below the BOW radar. Maybe I need to get that re-calibrated! But I was watching live, and there was Sarah Silverman making jokes about little Paris, with the producers cutting right to her surprised, annoyed face. And there were four or five other such references during the night. And she’s not a good enough actress to appear to have been a good sport about it. Sure once in a while she would manage to throw a smirk up there just before the camera cut away, but you could tell it really hurt her to get teased like this from her hip peers.

And you know what? For the first time I felt sorry for Paris Hilton. Oh she deserves to go to jail. It will only do her good to get slapped down for breaking laws. But she’s not prepared at all, even for teasing. Even separated from the general population (sample dialog from CAGED HEAT that Paris Hilton will never hear: “I’m gonna cut you, white meat!” “Where do you want it?” “Yard!”) she’s going to take this slap on the wrist harder than anyone has taken a slap before.

Then again, maybe my natural sympathy for young half-naked women is getting the better of me.

Tamara Dobson (to Sybil Danning): “Don’t You walk away from me, you chalk-faced whore!”
John Vernon: “Terrible things happen in here. Terrible things.”

Ah, Caged Heat. If I mentally strip Linda Blair out of the film and drop Paris Hilton in her place… That’s a slice of fried gold.

I’m doing a disservice to my readers if I don’t steer you toward the CAGED HEAT trailer.

There, you’ll see that Tamara Dobson actually says, “Don’t You WALK away from me, you chalk-faced whore!” A subtle but important distinction.

Okay– we BOTH got that one wrong. CAGED HEAT was made in 1974 by rookie director Jonathan Demme and featured Juanita Brown and Barbara Steele. (This is the one the YouTube link points to, BTW.) It’s one of the few WiP (Women in Prison) films I can think of that has something of a social conscience. Not much of one, but…

CHAINED HEAT was made in 1983 by Paul Nicolas (Lutz Schaarwächter) and featured Tamara Dobson, Linda Blair, Stella Stevens and John Vernon. That’s the one we saw at the Del Mar, and the one that’s on the Trailer Reel. So wrong, so wrong.

And you know why I know this.

CHAINED Heat trailer. Much funnier. I’ve SEEN Caged Heat but it was really late at night and I think part of some kind of marathon so I remember nothing. As for the previous wrong link, well, there’s no sound on my computer at work and you can’t tell one women’s prison from another just by looking.

    Mother of Pearl!
