Anglican Church Notices Shootout in Cathedral

Manchester Cathedral, you're bringing me downWhat’s a big media company to do? You can’t swing a dead cat around here without hitting someone who demands an apology. In this case the Dead Cat is a PS3 game featuring a human/alien gun battle, the Here is Manchester Cathedral in England and the Guy hit is the Anglican Church.

Oh and Sony, publisher of RESISTANCE: FALL OF MAN, is our cat-swingin’ friend. I hope I’m not beating a dead horse here. The Dead Horse would be the metaphor in the first sentence.

Okay, the coffee has kicked in now. Sony Corp has apologized to the Anglican Church for RESISTANCE: FALL OF MAN, a game which uses the Manchester Cathedral as a setting for a gun battle (probably gun/raygun) between man and hostile aliens.

The cathedral’s dean, the Very Rev. Rogers Govender, said he had received a letter from Sony… He thanked Sony for the apology, but underlined the church’s opposition to violence, “and especially the gun violence seen in this portrayal of the cathedral.”

Govender points out that in addition to what the church considers blasphemy, there is also the issue of excessive gun violence around the area of Manchester. Aliens to date have not been a problem. In fact, Sony included this apology clause in the letter:

…Sony said it did not accept “that there is any connection between contemporary issues in 21st century Manchester and the work of science fiction in which a fictitious 1950s Britain is under attack by aliens.”

And they did not add “but wow! What a great Dr. Who episode this would make!” I added that. Too much coffee.

    It certainly would!

Just imagine Tennant zooming about on his Vespa trying to stop some fiendish plot set by John Simm’s Master! All the while 10-story tall three legged Martian attack vehicles are seen in the background green-ray-zapping historic landmarks.

[...] Memo to Anschutz: If you’re looking for ideas on how to monetize your investment, I suggest talking to Sony. They’re always looking for a place to stage their human/alien gunfights. [...]
