Them Are Fighting Words, Old Chap

Matt Damon is doing a lot of interviews lately. Perahaps too many, not to put too fine a point on it. Look what he said recently in London, at the UK premiere of THE BOURNE ULTIMATUM:

“Bond is an imperialist and a misogynist who kills people and laughs about it, and drinks Martinis and cracks jokes… Bourne is a serial monogamist whose girlfriend is dead and he does nothing but think about her.”

“The Bond character will always be anchored in the 1960s and in the values of the 1960s.”

Oh for M’s sake. Did this guy even see CASINO ROYALE or was he too busy? Of course, the great success of CR is due in a large part to the producers Bourne-i-fying the Bond franchise and rehumanizing the old boy. Still, anybody who is making his bones starring in Robert Ludlum adaptations shouldn’t be talking about anachronisms.

i’d be willing to let the whole thing go but at the same premiere, director Paul Greengrass added:

“The Bourne franchise is not about wearing Prada suits and looking at women coming out of the sea with bikinis on. It’s about essence and truth, not frippery and surface.”

Because really, who didn’t feel a little more enriched after Bourne snapped the neck of that assassin in Madrid? Let’s face it, the only difference betwen the two superspies is one of them has an expense account for clothes.
