That TRON Still Has Some Life Left In It
Word comes yesterday via the Hollywood Reporter that Disney is finally getting around to rezzing up a sequel to TRON, the 1982 computer graphics watershed that starred Jeff Bridges, gave Bruce Boxleitner his big break and inexplicably failed to make an international sex symbol of Cindy Morgan. If get a chance rent it: ignore the ridiculous dialog and you’ll see the only known love-child of SPARTACUS and THE WIZARD OF OZ. Plus, the electronic score rocks.
The sequel is to be produced by original director Steve Lisberger and directed by commercial director Joseph Kosinski. Lisberger came out of the commercial world too. Kosinski is said to also have architecture in his background.
Kosinski is a former architect whose specs caught the attention of director David Fincher, who convinced Kosinski to move to Los Angeles, where he joined the director at commercial house Anonymous Content. Kosinski then moved quickly up the ladder, eventually directing award-winning spots for Nike, Apple and Nintendo that gained notice for their use of computer technology that erased the lines between reality and CGI.
If the Disney execs can keep their paws off of the sequel like they did the original (they were preoccupied with THE BLACK HOLE, a movie which eventually was used to describe Disney stock options in the early eighties) then TRON V.2, or whatever they’re gonna call it, could be pretty damn good. And this time they won’t have to cheat by shooting black sets outlined with masking tape and solarizing the results. Come to think of it, there won’t be any need for real cameras at all, will there? They can actually bring Bruce Boxleitner and Cindy Morgan back to do voices! Hell, they can CONSTRUCT Boxleitner!
Oh man, the sequel is gonna suck.

Wow! Bruce Boxleitner has really let himself go!
And yeah, It’s gonna suck the tailpipe hard. As hard as The Keanu Stood Still, I dunno. The CG cheats from the ‘82 original was part of the charm of it, if ya ask me.

I didn’t like TRON when it came out. I thought it was lame. Of course, that was around the time I was failing my FORTRAN class in high school.
After I got over my compuphobia, I gained a certain appreciation and affection for the movie.
So is Keanu taking over the Jeff Bridges part, or will he play the CPU?

Keanu would LOVE this project. In a lot of ways, THE MATRIX is the unofficial, darker sequel to TRON.
