Most people are concerned that the writer’s strike will go on too long - here’s an item that will make you worry that it will end too soon.

Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger is said to be considering a return to his other lucrative career when his term ends in 2010. According to The Hollywood Reporter just before the strike, agents were “putting out feelers” for material and pitches that might interest the big fellah. According to the talk in the street, Schwar was inspired by the late-season box office performance of Bruce Willis and Sylvester Stallone, the two closest analogies to him and business partners in his wobbly PLANET HOLLYWOOD chain. Ray Richmond of the Reporter did what I would never do, question a source directly. He got a hold of Aaron McLear, the Governer’s spokesman.

Here is what McLear had to say: “Once the governor’s current term is up, he may go back to the movies, or devote energy to business, or continue working on environmental issues, or run a foundation — or start painting!” He continued, “But the governor has decided nothing final as yet and is devoting his energy to the job of running the state.”

And what about any political future beyond 2010? McLear’s quote mentioned nothing about that. Was McLear aware that his statement included no political option?

“Yes,” he replied.

It would be a flimsy thing to hang a story on normally, but everybody knows it’s just a matter of time. And as Richmond points out, Schwarzenegger’s opportunity for advancement in his current job are limited. Sure he could shoot for Senator, but after that? You’re not going to see a President Schwarzenegger any time soon, unless they change the Constitution or you move to an alternate universe. Besides, if you were him, would you want your last movie role to be that appalling cameo in AROUND THE WORLD IN 80 DAYS?
