Backing The Wrong Horse
A few entries ago I crowed about our new HD DVD player and the incredible quality of the content available.
I also mentioned Warner Bros., A home video giant with a massive catalog of titles, was hedging their bets, putting out HD titles in both Blu-Ray and HD DVD. On Saturday, they announced they had finally decided to go one way– and they picked Blu-Ray.
God Damn It.
This statement, made to more or less coincide with the opening of the massive Consumer Electronics Show (CES), meant only two studios– Universal and Paramount– were backing HD DVD.
God Damn It.
Toshiba, the only manufacturer making HD DVD-only players (others make dual-format decks) had a large-scale presentation scheduled for CES on Sunday. They abruptly canceled it.
God Damn It.
So… Does anyone out there want to by a nice Toshiba A3 player? I’ll throw in a few titles.

HD DVD is the new Betamax.

Ironic, considering that Sony was responsible for the old Betamax.
The last I read, HD-DVD was doing better in Europe, so maybe HD-DVD will be the new PAL. Or SEACAM.
