You Either Write, Or You Experience
Usually by now I’d have written a commentary for this week’s show. But it’s been one hell of a busy week.
Here’s the deal, Box Office Weekly Fans: your host has leant his awesome talents to too many areas lately. The chief time drain is the Stage Door Theatre in Agoura, a little equity-waiver house in a little community just barely within the county of Los Angeles. My rule of thumb is that I act once a year and I wasn’t due again until after summer, but the guy who runs the place invited me to audition for ON GOLDEN POND, playing Charlie The Mailman. You know, the character who had a crush on Jane Fonda in the movie. Actually I don’t remember him either.
Anyway, that was taking up three nights a week for rehearsal. However, as we were getting ready to open Mike Monteleone, the director of the next play NO SEX PLEASE WE’RE BRITISH, asked me if I’d help out and act in that too. It’s a small part but I’m in all the acts, so for several weeks now I’ve been at that damn theatre six days a week. Seven every other week because of the matinees.
ON GOLDEN POND closed Saturday night, which means the theatre is available for more nights to rehearse NO SEX. It’s a classic farce with characters running in and out of seven onstage doors, so timing and choreography play huge parts in this show. It’s almost like Cirque de Soliel only we’re not wearing tights, thank God.
It’s been busy at my straight job, which means I have to devote ALL my time there to doing, you know, actual work instead of blogging. The only time I would have had to write a commentary would have been Sunday. But Sunday I was helping Mike install all those doors onto the set, then I rushed to Downtown LA to appear on a talk radio show with my friend Priscilla Leona.
She’s not related in any way to Mike Monteleone, but it’s certainly an odd coincidence isn’t it? The “leone” thing I mean. Weird.
I mostly used Priscilla’s show to plug this show, and the acting of course. By the way, no one called in! I’m probably going back in November or December, let’s get a little action shall we? Otherwise it was great fun appearing on the show. The studios are gorgeous with an enormous picture window overlooking downtown LA. Plus, Priscilla paid for parking.
So why no commentary this week? Not only have I not had time to write, I haven’t had time to form an opinion. I think I’ll have an opinion next week because I at least have the weekend free. Come to think of it, that WAS an opinion. Go figure! It’s easier than I thought. Damn, I should have written a commentary.
